What the check does
When you add a photo to your profile, a card or a group you’re in, Wisteria runs an automated check to find where a face is in the picture. That is how your first photo is kept to one that shows a face, and how your round picture is centred on you. The check never makes a faceprint and is never used to recognise you or anyone else. It is run for Wisteria by Amazon Web Services.
What is kept
The check’s findings, where each face is and how clearly it shows, are used once, when the photo is placed, and then destroyed. Wisteria keeps the photo itself, a small square copy of it centred on you, one point marking where the photo sits in its frames, and whether a face was found. A point has no size or shape: it cannot recognise you, match you to another photo, or find you anywhere else.
How long it is kept
The check’s findings are destroyed within an hour of the photo being placed, usually within minutes, and within a day for a photo you uploaded but never placed. When you remove the photo or delete your account, its point goes at once, and the photo and its square copy are cleared from storage within 30 days. In every case, the check’s findings are destroyed once the purpose for collecting them has been satisfied, or within three years of your last interaction with Wisteria, whichever comes first.
Who sees it
Nobody outside Wisteria. Amazon Web Services is sent the photo and returns where the faces are; it keeps none of the photo once it has answered, and does not use it to improve its own services. Wisteria never sells or shares what the check finds, and never uses it to recognise anyone.
Your choices
You agree to the check on the rules card before your first profile photo, and no profile photo can be added without that agreement. When a photo shows more than one face, you pick yours as you add it. Questions about any of this go to the privacy address below.
